"Critics - especially from the right - will dismiss "Mosh" as a shrewd attempt to boost record sales by capitalizing on the tide of anti-Bush populism. Yet, Eminem has truly made a leap with "Mosh." In his first four albums - despite pointing out the absurdities of American politics and culture - his mantra, ultimately, was "I just don't give a fuck." Never before has he advocated for political change. Even if the song's late arrival gives it a limited impact on the vote, Eminem's pronounced political shift should send shivers through the largely unchecked right wing establishment." -- Alternet.org

So I have been on this major Stanley Kubrick kick lately. I finally watched 'Eyes Wide Shut' last night which made me feel sad and dirty but whatever. The thing that I love so much about his films is how NOTHING is accidental - the incredible attention given to detail, the play on the subconscious. I've been trying to learn more about Kubrick, and I found a couple of interesting articles on 'The Shining' (1, 2) and 'Eyes Wide Shut' (interesting, hoo boy).

(Prepare for longish rant): So as a resident of the great swing state of Ohio, I have been absolutely pummeled with partisan advertisements and rhetoric the last few months. What's worse, all of this really seems to be getting to the residents, and I know formerly friendly relationships that have soured as the result of incompatible political views. The hardest thing is that people have arguments that are so contrary and yet each side absolutely BELIEVES they are RIGHT. It's borderline religious. So what's a girl to do? I present you Factcheck.org. So far this is the only political fact checking site I have encountered that seems to call both sides out equally on their bullshit. I like that. I need that.

An interesting article discussing the obstacles students must face in order to vote. With an election that is sure to be close, it raises some controversial points. So what is your opinion of this? It's a 'grassroots' campaign to petition Nader running for presidency because 'once again' he will take away democratic votes and Bush will win. Personally, I think it's a bunch of bullshit. I feel that my responsibility as a voting member of a democracy is to vote for the candidate that I support the most (whoever that may be) - that once you bring strategy into it, you fundamentally corrupt the intention of democracy. Thoughts?

If you have seen Rainman, you know this station, remember Dustin Hoffman repeating over and over, '97X, Bam! The future of Rock and Roll!' Yeah, it's the same thing. They were so great - they would play songs that were 20 years old, and songs that were so new that no one had heard them yet. Songs by the most esoteric indie band ever, and then songs by Phish. All they cared about was good music. I am going to go cry now.

The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals. Go to their site and click on the purple button, "Feed An Animal In Need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising. Come on, don't be a turd. Just do it.

Wow. Next time you are looking for an image, consider using the New York Public Library's Image Gate. Image Gate provides free and open access to thousands of The New York Public Library's digitized images, taken from the Research Libraries' collections. At its inception, the Image Gate database contains approximately 80,000 images spanning a wide range of subjects. This number will grow as The Library digitizes more images; this phased rollout will end in 2004, when the site will include more than 600,000 images. Image Gate demonstrates the rich potential for discovery in The Library's vast international collections of prints, drawings, photographs, illuminated manuscripts, rare books, maps, popular graphics and printed ephemera.

The Most Bizarre Thing That Has Happened to Me in a Good While

So my guy, Dan, and I were approached by a swinger. For real. We were at this bar, the Southern Belle, on Saturday night with a group of friends. We had been there for an hour or so when a strange man approached us. He was a 35-40ish drunk redneck who looked like this. Well, minus the shades. Anyway, here is the conversation that ensued:

Swinger: "Excuse me man, are you two a couple?"
Dan & Harriet: "mmm, yeah?"
S: "Well, look, it's my girlfriend's birthday. We don't really have anything planned, but we've invited some other couples back over to our place with us. You're welcome to come . . . " wink wink
(AND THEN!)
S: "I can't do drugs cos I get tested for work see, but we can get you guys whatever you're into"
H: "mmm, not so much"
D: "NO."

Dayton is a strange place . . .
